I am about to bestow upon you the most amazing elixir ever. It’s a “sit your bumper down in your chair,” kickin’ that “you didn’t have sugar but you’re acting like you had it mood swing – shot of good fats and protein – all things good for you” kid drink.
I got the idea for bullet proof milk from bullet proof coffee and a magical conversation I had with Dr. Green Mom, and decided to share it with you because friends don’t keep the good things to themselves. (Am I right?) This frothy goodness is packed with legit nutrition, takes two minutes to throw together, and will allow you to drink your coffee in peace while they drink “theirs.”
The secret? Butter and collagen – two very simple ingredients that when combined, effect everything from your skin and bones to your blood sugar and brain. Adding a good fat to your kid’s “milk” provides a slow and steady release of energy (the good kind), a truckload of essential fatty acids, and numerous vitamins and minerals.
But here’s really why I make it: Sometimes my kids get a little crazy and on days when their ability to focus is non-existent, their diet is lacking, and my ability to deal is done, I throw this little lovely together and …
BAM!Â
My kids with sensory issues are able to deal, my hyperactive child is calm, they can look me in the eyes, sit longer than five seconds, and hold a conversation while using the coveted “inside voice.” It’s simply magical. (You know you want to try it.)
PrintBullet Proof “Milk”
A nutritent-dense magical elixir to help balance your child’s energy, sugar levels, focus, and concentration.
- Prep Time: 5 mins
- Total Time: 5 mins
- Yield: 3-4 Servings 1x
Ingredients
- 1. 3 Cups Unsweetened or Naturally-Sweetened Vanilla Almond or Coconut Milk
- 2. 1 Heaping Tablespoon of Organic Butter (or coconut oil if dairy-free)
- 3. 1 Scoop of Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides
- 4. 3-6 Drops (or to taste) of Liquid Stevia
Instructions
- Warm almond milk (medium heat) on the stove.
- Combine almond milk, butter, and collagen in a blender and blend until nice and frothy.
- Pour into a mug so your girl can pretend she’s drinkin’ coffee just like you.
If your kids have a hard time concentrating, need a little boost in their nutrition, or simply have an obsession with drinking all things from a mug … give them their fix and toss the breakfast junk juice for something a little “bullet proof.”
What about if I skipped collagen, would that be fine for my kids? Having a hard time getting one here in the Philippines.
You certainly can. It will be less “frothy” though.
Hi, I’m loving your website. I keep flicking from topic to topic. My son is recently diagnosed with MTHFR. Would this be ok for him? His brother is on the spectrum too (getting him tested now for MTHFR) so thought this might help calm him down also. I couldn’t read ingredients on the collagen peptides so just want to check there is nothing we should be avoiding on it. currently gluten free and staying away from folic. Thanks
Yes. It would be great for him. There is no folic acid in these ingredients. 🙂
There is a recipe on the vital collagen website. That you make your own nut milk. 4 cup nut milk, 1/2 tsp collagen, and 2 TB coconut oil. I was going to try 2 TB high vitamin butter or mct oil. I know that isn’t much collagen but it’s something. Especially if your kids don’t like the taste of collagen
Do you know anything about vitamin butter? If I tried your recipe but did vitamin butter? Although some people claim that vitamin butter doesn’t do much without the fermented cod liver. Thoughts? My kids both speech delayed and one has sensory processing
I can’t wait to try this, both for me and my very active son!
Check back and let me know how it goes!
Is the taste of the collagen neutral or does it lend any flavor? Some of my patient’s palates are very sensitive. TY! I usually suggest this recipe with coffee to ADHD kids who are primarily inattentive. It actually doesn’t make them more hyperactive.
There are flavored collagens out there. I use unflavored and I can’t taste it.
Love this recipe. Can’t wait to try .. my daughter can’t do wheat, gluten or Rye.. is the collagen gf
Collagen should be gf, as it’s from animal sources. Always worth checking, I have found other ingredients even in my milk lately!
I made this with coconut milk, butter, collagen, a little bit of raw honey, and a generous dash of cinnamon!! The cinnamon really was an amazing addition!
Thank you so much for this recipe Megan!
That sounds yum! Glad you liked it. 😉
Can the collegen be replaced with a plant priduct with the same results?
I haven’t tried it so I can’t tell you how it would turn out! 🙂
Is the collagen okay for a 2 year that has allergies to casein and whey protein?
I would use something else just to be safe. You can get fish or chicken collagen.
Are the collagen peptides safe for my two-year-old?
Yes. 🙂
We don’t digest stevia well – do you think a smidgen of maple syrup would be alright, or might it funk the flavor?
Nope! Maple syrup would be delicious.
What do you do if the kid is allergic to dairy?
Try coconut oil instead of butter. 🙂
Two questions, can you use whole milk and what brand of coconut milk do you use?
I use So Delicious coconut milk. I personally don’t do dairy but I am sure it would work with whole milk too.
What about adding a little chocolate for “hot cocoa”?
I think that would be DE-LICIOUS. Butter and chocolate? Yum.
*Just know that cacao contains a small amount of caffeine. 😉
Megan
I used carob powder + chocolate flavored stevia. It was definitely amazing.
That sounds delicious! Def. going to try that.
I’m making this for me too! I don’t do coffee so I’m intrigued plus I have been wanting to use collagen more often so this could work well! Thanks.
Unfortunately my daughter won’t drink anything like this without it being hidden in a smoothie or something. she is suspicious and skeptical of everything! Think it would change the way collagen works if it were frozen? calming ice cream? 🙂 she might be convinced to try that.
When you mix collagen in a cold liquid it gets a little chunky. I have never tried putting it in ice cream. You can make “jello” with collagen though (by adding a few tablespoons to warmed juice and then putting it in the fridge). This works really well. (It’s called “Kantin.”) You could make the juice yourself if you want to make it from start to finish. 😉
As for you, you can try this with different flavors of stevia or also use a naturally sweetened “milk” if you want to get creative.
Enjoy!
Megan
